Amanda Pipes’s Portrait Session Photographed at Her Office For She’s So Brave by Discovery House

She’s So Brave – Amanda Pipes

The interview begins with laughter.

So you don’t have to share if you don’t want to, your call. So state your full name for the record.

My name is Amanda Marie Pipes.

And how old are you?

I’m 30 years old.

So tell us a little about you, who you are, what are some of your passions?

I’m pretty outdoorsy. (And I get to be outside) for my job.

What do you do?

I’m a horticulturist, (so I’m) always outside. It’s been a great way to make some money at my passions

Its cool you get to do that. So, tell us a bit about the bravest thing you’ve ever done.

Probably what I’m doing now in terms of my career, I’ve been told from a very young age that I can’t do what guys do; you’re too short, you’re not strong enough, you’re not smart enough to finish school; that kind of self doubt that other people put on you. And then, (I) crush those.

It’s taken a long time, but within the last couple years I’ve really come around to be the person I want to be in my career.

How has that changed you?

It makes me see the bigger picture. You’re first presented with something that you don’t think you can do, and then (it’s) once you work really hard that’s the key. Anyone can say whatever they want, but if you put in the work, and you put in the time, and you put in the effort, you’ll get the results. I think that’s helped a lot in everything that I do. Just again, erasing the doubt. People tell you “you’re not like a man so you can’t do this job” or “you can’t do this and can’t do that.”

But when you put in the work, you get results.

Do you get that a lot in this line of work?

Yeah I do. And you get people on sales calls at their door like, wow you’re a woman. And I‘m like “Yeah, they let me out of the kitchen today!”

Laughter.

It used to bother me, but it doesn’t anymore. I can do what anyone else can do, and I can do it better.
