Little Caleb’s Newborn Photos When he was just 14 Days New

The Carriere Newborn Session

The bundle of joy that is Caleb Ho Huang Carriere came into the world early, at 6:58 am on April 4th, just as the sun was beginning to light up downtown Calgary. From the room at the Foothills Hospital, Steve and Chelsia had a Lion King moment with their newborn to welcome him.

We had the pleasure of shooting Caleb’s Newborn Session at our studio in Calgary just two weeks after he was born at 6lbs, 1 oz, and 18 ¾ inches long. He’s grown a lot since then. Looking stylish in a crochet Mario cap and pullovers, he slept peacefully as we photographed him.

What’s in a Name?

The name Caleb is Hebrew for wholehearted, and also sounds a lot like the Hebrew word for dog. 2018, being the Year of the Dog; it fit perfectly. And, to top it all off, Steve had wanted to name his future son Caleb since he was 16 years old. They had come up with other names during the pregnancy, but as soon as their baby joined the world, he was undoubtedly a Caleb.

For his middle name, Chelsia wanted something that retained his Chinese heritage, so she enlisted her father. It doesn’t mean much if you look at the individual characters, but all together, Ho Huang evokes the elements. Gold, Water, and Earth fit together to form a well-rounded name that he will carry with him for life.

Welcoming Caleb into the World

He was born at 37 weeks and 3 days; induced after Chelsia developed gestational high blood pressure. It was a long process – 28 hours – making Chelsia quite the superhero. She was understandably exhausted during labour, so exhausted in fact, that she was falling asleep between contractions. As soon as he was born, Steve saw his eyes open for the first time, and as they cut the cord, the pink came into his cheeks.

They moved Caleb to the NICU quickly; he had feeding issues, which meant for a few days he had to wear a tube in his nose. He was born on a Wednesday and wasn’t discharged until the following Sunday. Chelsia and Steve probably only got twelve hours of sleep over the entire four day period.

The staff at the Foothills NICU were incredible. They put Chelsia and Steve in a room donated by a couple whose children were in NICU for an extended period. A fundraiser helped build a hotel-type suite so parents can stay comfortably with their babies overnight and feel at home.

The Newborn Session

Despite his turbulent arrival, Steve and Chelsia are adjusting well to parenthood. They brought Caleb in for his newborn session with a bunch of different outfits, including his Mario costume and an adorable lion onesie his grandmother bought him. For the Mario setting he even had a crochet star blanket, a question mark block, and a little Yoshi stuffie. We started on a beanbag, before moving him into a wooden nest lined with a cozy fur blanket. His eyes opened briefly, but he nodded off again as Chelsia held him for family photos. We photographed the new parents with their new son, before taking a final shot of Chelsia and Steve together, beaming with joy.

We had a wonderful time with them at their session and we hope all of you enjoy their photos 🙂
