A Beautiful Newborn Session at our Calgary Studio

Welcoming Little Elliot into the Funk Family
Ryan, Laura, two-year-old Marshall, and baby Elliot came into the studio for a newborn session. Born on February 11th, Elliot was only 11 days old at the shoot!
She came into the world very fast. Laura and Ryan knew ahead of time that she was breech, so they were ready to head to the hospital. Laura had a good feeling that the baby would come on Friday too! Helen and Britney of Birth Partnerships Morningstar team were so helpful through the entire pregnancy. They were also big advocates for Laura and Ryan and wanted them to be able to have their breech delivery instead of a C-section.
Laura’s contractions started at 9 pm, but she wasn’t entirely sure they were real. They went to bed around 10, but by 11 o’clock the contractions were intensifying. She called the midwives at midnight, called her sister for support, and called their friends to come watch Marshall. Laura’s sister headed out with them to South Health Campus at 12:30 am, and they arrived shortly after 1 am. It was a huge help to have the support of her sister, who had also been present for Marshall’s birth. When they arrived at the hospital, Laura was already dilated 8cm, and was almost ready to deliver!
They were wheeled into a room, and 40 minutes after they’d arrived, Elliot was born. The birth was a lot faster than it had been with Marshall! So, Elliot Rose Funk came into the world at 2:28 am on February 11th, under a full moon and a shining comet.
When Laura and Ryan returned home at 6:30 am, Marshall was still asleep. When he awoke, he had a new baby sister! He wasn’t surprised at all, just excited!
The Name Elliot
When Laura and Ryan were expecting Marshall, they had the name Elliot picked out if he was a girl. So they’ve been sitting on the name Elliot for over two years! They loved that the name can have a few nicknames, like Ellie or El, and that it’s a unisex moniker. Her middle name, Rose, was Laura’s mother’s middle name too, so they wanted to keep it in the family. They also like that ‘Rose’ is a feminine middle name to juxtapose the unisex first name. Since they kept the gender of their baby a secret, it was a happy surprise that they could use the name Elliot for their new daughter!
Little Elliot’s Newborn Session
Elliot is such a cute little baby, and when she was born she weighed only 6lbs! When they came in for the session, she didn’t want to settle down. But once we got her fed, changed, and warm, she snuggled right in and was happy as a clam. At first, we placed her in a basket, surrounded by a chunky knit blanket and a little wrap. We wrapped her in a little potato sack for the adorable family photos. Marshall was having fun playing in the studio. He brought a few trucks along and burned off some energy on our little trampoline. To shoot the photographs, we asked him to see if Elliot had chocolate in her ear. This helped us get a few adorable shots of him looking intensely at her. He also loves raisins, so we hid a few underneath her for him to find. She was wrapped in a white blanket on top of a sheep throw, with a tiny pink flower headband on. To wrap up the shoot, we took a few shots of baby Elliot in the buff, to show off just how tiny she is.
