Into the Woods for a Family Session
The Portrait Session in Fish Creek Park
On a beautiful Sunday in November, we headed down to the sprawling Fish Creek Park to shoot a portrait session with the Hammer family. The family consists of Angela, Michael, their 22-month-old son Cameron, and their adorable dog.
Fish Creek Park in Calgary is a favourite location for photo sessions, as there are so many beautiful spots to shoot within its 14 kilometres of parkland. We settled on the Shannon Terrace within the park, in part because it was quiet, but mostly because of the beautiful forested areas. Shannon Terrace has a woodsy feel. It serves as a majestic backdrop for family portraits, with lots of spruce trees and open spaces.
We started the session with a couple family shots, Cameron on mom’s lap as the family sat on a fallen tree. We then got a few shots of Michael holding their son, and then a few of Angela with him as well. We got one more family pose in before Cameron began to grow tired of modelling, so we gave him a break. While he played we took some close shots of Angela and Michael together.
We brought along a curved wooden seat and a wool blanket, where we sat Cameron for some adorable individual shots. These turned out very cute, as his playful, exploratory mood had him crawling up and around in the seat. As Cameron and the family dog were playing we grabbed a few candid shots as well.
To finish up the session we decided to go for a walk along one of the trails. On the path we snapped some action shots of the family, with Angela and Michael swinging little Cameron between them. Eventually, Cameron was tuckered right out. We used the sleepiness in the shoot, and got some adorable photos of him in his mother’s arms, a soother in his mouth.
