A Windy Winter’s Afternoon in Fish Creek’s Bebo Grove
Their Family Session at Fish Creek Park
We met the Kurrasch family for their portrait session in North Glenmore Park. However, when we arrived on the ridge, we were met with some crazy weather. Even though the temperature was fairly warm for late December, the cold winds whipped heavily on the exposed hillside. So, instead of setting up the shoot overlooking the reservoir, we piled back into the vehicles and drove out to the sprawling, and much more sheltered, Fish Creek Park.
Debbie, Jason, their two young sons Jack and Charlie, Debbie’s brother Peter, and the grandparents Rich and Ann, all joined together for the big family session. The last time the group had family photos done was nearly seven years ago, so they were due for a reshoot! Jack and Charlie are both very easy going and athletic kids, and they seemed to have a lot of fun during the session.
At the end of 24th ave we entered the park, which was a perfect spot to beat the wind. Bebo Grove in the park sits in the river valley, which means it was much less windy! The park, with its big trees and water features, also afforded us many more opportunities for the shoot. With it’s big pine trees it felt like we had driven clear out of the city. Moving from the windy ledge at North Glenmore Park was the right choice.
We began the session with a candid group photo of the family walking along the path in the park. We found a nice grove of trees with the sun twinkling through the boughs and branches, and it created a beautiful golden glow that backlit the family. A little breeze brushed through the trees, causing the snow that was resting on the branches to float down into the frame. The light snowfall created a magical winter setting that we could not have planned!
The grandparents, Rich and Ann, flew in for the holidays from California, so needless to say the Calgary weather felt pretty cold! But they were troopers, and kept their jackets off for all the shots. We tried to move as quickly as possible to get them out of the cold.
Then we found another spot where the sun was peeking through the trees, and got a few different kinds of shots. We headed onto a nice iron bridge over the creek bed, and got a cute photograph of the whole family leaning over the railing. We shot a few candids of the family playing in the snow around the creek. Grandpa Rich picked up the youngest grandson, Charlie, and pretended to throw him into the river. Uncle Peter lifted Charlie onto his shoulders, and he and the boys played around in the snow under a leaning spruce tree. We rounded out the family session with a shot of the whole clan walking through a tunnel of conifer trees.
Because of the large group size, the Kurrasch’s left their new five-month-old puppy in the vehicle during the shoot. With all the excitement, the shoot would have been nuts! The family just recently lost their previous dog, so when we returned to the vehicles we grabbed a few shots of Jason and his new puppy.
And that was that! We had a lovely day with the Kurrasch Family. It was a bit of an adventure, and lasted a little longer than intended, but in the end it was a great choice to move our location to Fish Creek Park.
