The Szarmes’s Family Photos at Bowness Park in Calgary

A Sunset Session with the Szarmes Family

For the Szarmes family session we headed down to Bowness Park near their home. Bowness itself has a fascinating history; once an independent town, it has since been absorbed by the ever-expanding city of Calgary.

The recent streak of fantastic weather held up, and a chinook moved into town to melt much of the snow away. We caught the park just as the sun was setting, where the lighting and mild weather made the session fun and easy.

We met the family (Donna, Michael, Alex, Nathaniel, Meagan, and Alyssa) at a little cafe near the entrance to the park, where they were ordering a few warm drinks to prep for the shoot. Immediately we made a connection, discovering that the oldest daughter Meagan works at the Tao of Peace, the same martial arts studio Jeremy (our head photographer) worked at! The studio has been part of the city for 25 years and has become a long-standing pillar of the community. Meagan has been part of it for ten years, and she and Jeremy both owe a lot to the head instructor, Chris Lee Smith. This discovery was a neat way to start the session. It’s a small world after all!

After reminiscing, we began photographing the family at the ice skating rink in the park. The pond freezes over in the winter, and fun-loving Calgarians come down to spend some time outdoors. We used the rink as the backdrop for our first shots and then headed over to the Seasons of Bowness Park Restaurant to use their wooden patio.

Next, we crossed a bridge to the canoe docks. From there, we captured beautiful images of the family, as the sun set through the trees. We cycled through different groupings and took walking shots along the bridge.

The kids wanted to do something fun with the awesome lighting, so Meagan began with a few silhouetted yoga poses. This quickly morphed into the family posing in all sorts of different ways! Donna did a Wonder Woman pose, Alex mused over a translucent leaf, and Alyssa pulled her ‘ferociously defiant’ posture. We all had a good laugh.

A set of train tracks runs through the park, remnants of the old trolley that ran around Bowness. These tracks are a beautiful relic of the past, so we used them as our final backdrop.
We had a lovely time with the Szarmes family. They were an excellent group to spend the day with, and we hope they love their images as much as we enjoyed photographing them!
